READ MOREMany common plants and fungi in our local forests, meadows, and parks are not only edible but also delicious and nutritious. Wild edibles often contain more nutrition and flavor than their cultivated counterparts, which are often bred for predictability and pest resistance.
Distinguished local chef and forager, Maria Reidelbach will speak about the joy and fulfillment of discovering edible treasures in the wild. Reidelbach has been passionate about foraging since childhood and has spent the last 30 years honing her skills and expanding her knowledge. She is an author, and artist, a former president of the New York Mycological Society, and a cooking instructor for the Cornell Cooperative Extension. This talk will showcase examples of foraged flora and fungi from Marbletown’s new Osterhoudt Park, as well as a curated collection of books on the topic to browse.

On the surface, farmers and environmentalists seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum but how true is that? Is there a tradeoff between producing food and preserving wildlife habitat? How do farmers protect ground-nesting birds, turtles, and amphibians? How do herbicide treatments and fertilizers affect groundwater, soils, and streams? Are conventional farmers getting a bad rap?
Jake Wedemeyer has been with the Ulster County Soil and Water Conservation District for 22 years. His passion is dairy farming, and he worked for Crystal Spring Dairy Farm in Andes, NY, one of the nation’s top Jersey herds. Jake has a Bachelor's in Environmental Science with a minor in chemistry, a Master’s in Geography, and is a Certified Professional in Crop Advisement and Erosion and Sediment Control. He will answer any of your questions on the impact of farmers’ choices on the environment.
